Record the full footprint

Note room dimensions, door widths and the route from the building entrance to the room. Large equipment may fit the room but not the stairs or lift. Ask the retailer for packaged dimensions as well as assembled dimensions.

Read the operating-clearance guidance

Manufacturer instructions should specify the space required around the item. Moving handles, pedals, cables and adjustable seats can extend beyond the stored footprint. Include enough room to enter, leave and adjust the equipment safely.

Check the conditions

Consider ventilation, lighting, electrical requirements and floor suitability. Garages can be damp or dusty, and balconies introduce weather and structural questions. Equipment intended for indoor use should not be assumed suitable outdoors.

Keep a room record

Photograph the empty area for your own reference and write down the measurements. Compare several options against the same record. If flooring or building load is uncertain, ask a qualified professional; this website’s setup finder does not assess structural safety.
