Test the real journey
Visit at the time you expect to train, including the commute. A location that looks convenient on a map may be awkward after work. Notice queues, opening hours and how easy it is to enter and leave. Ask whether holiday hours differ.
Look beyond the equipment list
Check cleanliness, maintenance and whether staff are available to explain equipment. Ask about inductions and how trainer credentials can be checked. If you enjoy classes, confirm that the actual timetable works for you; a long list of classes means little if none fits your schedule.
Compare the full commitment
Write down the joining fee, recurring charge, minimum term, notice period and any access restrictions. Ask about freezing, cancellation and what happens if you move. Obtain the terms in writing. Compare the total commitment rather than only a promotional monthly headline.
Use a simple scorecard
Score each candidate for journey, useful opening hours, atmosphere, equipment availability and support. Then record the total cost separately. A trial visit can answer more than a polished photograph. Choose the option that fits your own routine and budget.
