Identify the exact item

Request the model, approximate age and any serial number. Ask for the original instructions and whether parts have been replaced. A familiar brand name is not enough to identify the model or its stated limits.

Inspect before committing

Look for missing hardware, corrosion, damaged cables, unstable bases and cracked components. Ask to see adjustments and controls demonstrated. If you cannot judge the condition safely, get a qualified technician to inspect it. Do not use damaged equipment to test whether it is acceptable.

Check the ownership costs

Work out collection, access, assembly and any repair costs. Find out whether spare parts are available and whether the warranty transfers. A low asking price can become less attractive after transport and service are included.

Avoid rushed decisions

Be cautious about pressure to pay before inspection or unclear seller details. Obtain a receipt describing the item and condition. Rules and buyer protection differ by marketplace and country. Be willing to leave an item that cannot be identified, inspected or moved appropriately.
