Start with the intended use
A flat bench and an adjustable bench serve different needs. Choose for the movements in your actual plan. More angles are only useful if the bench is stable, correctly adjusted and appropriate for that use.
Read the rating as written
Check whether the stated maximum includes the user plus weights or is defined differently. Do not assume marketing figures use the same method. Follow the manufacturer’s assembly and use instructions, and ask for clarification if the rating is unclear.
Check fit and access
Compare seat and pad dimensions, bench height, adjustment handles and gaps between pads. Include the space needed to get on, off and around the bench. A folding model still needs secure storage and a suitable location during use.
Ask about service and returns
Look for clear warranty terms, spare-parts access and an assembly guide. Check the return cost for a bulky item. If possible, inspect the model in person. A comparison table is helpful, but it cannot assess how a bench feels to you or verify its stability remotely.
Take this with you
Your checklist
- Match the bench to the intended use
- Clarify what the maximum load includes
- Check dimensions and access room
- Read assembly, service and return terms
